Not only is it the color of the year, but the latest celebrity to rock the color is Nicole Ritchie! I have been thinking about rocking it, too! Last year I did lilac dip tips on my own hair and loved the look.
Joel Warren (master colorist and co-founder of Warren Tricomi Salons) and George Papanikolas (Matrix Celebrity Hairstylist) weighed in on Nicole’s new color.
While Joel noted that the color is “difficult to achieve without sacrificing hair’s health” and George agreed that the shade can be “damaging” and “high-maintenance,” both love the look.
Below are more expert tips and products to make rocking this hair color hotter and healthier.
WHO CAN ROCK IT?
“Anyone who is fashion forward; Considering purple hair doesn't happen in nature, you don't need to be too concerned with your skin tone, but you will need to adjust your makeup. Too much and you can start to look like a clown. Nicole tends to keep her make-up natural which is a nice combination,” says George.
HOW TO MAINTAIN IT
· “Pastel colors fade quickly, so it is important to use products that will help the color last longer. To keep this bold of a shade, you have to refresh the color weekly,” says Joel.
· George agrees, “The upkeep is a full time job. The roots need retouching every few weeks, and the pastel toner every few days, otherwise it turns into an uneven platinum blonde.”
Oscar Blandi At-Home Salon Glaze When used weekly, this clear glaze prevents color fading and adds moisture, brightens natural & color treated hair and protects hair from heat damage. Joel Warren, Celebrity Colorist & Co-Founder of Warren-Tricomi Salons
Joel Warren is renowned for his ability to capture personality through hair color. A native New Yorker, Joel began styling in NYC salons in his early twenties, but found that color was his true calling. His clients have included Jessica Alba, Kate Beckinsale, Ivanka Trump, Rachel Hunter, Amanda Hearst, Vanessa Haydon and Paulina Porizkova.
In 1990, Joel collaborated with stylist Edward Tricomi and business guru Roxana Pintilie to launch the Warren-Tricomi flagship salon at 57th Street. They went on to open more salons, including popular locations in Greenwich, LA, and The Plaza Hotel. Today, the 6,100-square foot Plaza location exists as the flagship – a true testament to the pair’s supreme position in the industry.
Joel strives to strike a balance between innovation and satisfaction, using advanced techniques to create the perfect looks for his clients and getting to know them on a personal level so that he can understand each individual’s needs. He feels that hair color is about one’s personality and lifestyle, rather than following the latest celebrity trend. He currently serves as a L'Oréal Professionnel Hair Color Brand Ambassador.
George Papanikolas, Matrix Celebrity Hairstylist
As Matrix Celebrity Stylist and one of Hollywood’s most in-demand hair professionals, George has been behind many high profile color transformations. Most notably (and most recently), he set off unprecedented buzz and demand for honey kissed caramel tones after he took Khloe and Kim Kardashian blonde - the process was documented with George in the Season 9 premiere of “Keeping Up With the Kardashians.”
George has also worked with many of Hollywood’s trendy young “it” girls, including Megan Fox, Jenna Dewan-Tatum, Minka Kelly, Kate Walsh, Maria Menounos, AnnaLynne McCord and Hayden Panettiere. Inspired by his sunny, Southern California hometown, George pioneered the “beach-style” highlighting techniques that have evolved into today’s popular ombré and balayage techniques. Over time he has perfected his techniques--creating natural-looking, sun-kissed color that looks, as George notes, "like you've spent a summer at the beach rather than three hours at the salon.”
When not traveling for a specific client or project, the in-demand, bi-coastal color specialist can be found in West Hollywood at the Andy Lecompte Salon, and in New York City at the Rita Hazan Salon.
